How “ideal-weight” formulas evolved

1871 – 1930 : Broca (W = H − 100) and Noorden (0.42 × H) used height alone and seldom distinguished between men and women.

1960 – 1980 : Insurance and hospital datasets produced sex-specific equations: Hamwi (1964), Devine (1974), Robinson & Miller (1983).

1995 – 2025 : WHO popularised BMI ranges (18.5 – 24.9). Modern apps often set BMI ≈ 22 as a neutral target and tweak for ethnicity.

What do the formulas say for a 170 cm adult?
